I’m Shelby Hohsfield, a former Mormon who spent 20 years after leaving the chruch searching through religion, doubt, and confusion before finding freedom in the true gospel of Jesus Christ. I know what it feels like to start from scratch, to question everything, and to need things explained simply.
That’s why I created this podcast—to walk with you as you grow in faith, learn truth from Scripture, and experience the love of Jesus for yourself.

ABOUT YOUR HOST
Finding Faith Above is hosted by Shelby Hohsfield. Shelby grew up in a mixed-faith home and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon or LDS) church until she was 18. As most people do when they leave the church, 85% actually, Shelby left God altogether when she left the LDS church. It wasn’t until she was pregnant with her son that God was made evident to her.
From there sparked a quest to FIND FAITH, a fleeting idea that challenged her at every step.
After trying all matters of religion for years, she was struck one night when some big things literally brought her to her knees- When things got super hard, it was the surrender to the one true God that changed everything about Shelby’s life, belief, and understanding of this universe we live in.
After a 20-year journey after leaving the church, she finally found faith above.
As Jesus asked us to do, Shelby now dedicates herself to the great commission- telling the world the good news of Jesus.

It’s funny. When asked one of the number one things many people say is the most uncomfortable time during Thanksgiving is the prayer. Prayers should not make us uncomfortable! We are actually told in the bible not to worry about everything and to pray, yet the prayer is what has got us worried?!?! That is backward if I have ever heard anything. But when there is a specific way to our prayer that fits more in line with tradition than authenticity- well let’s just say it makes those who left that tradition/ religion/ church have moments of ugh, rather than peace with the Lord. What all does a prayer need to include?

In Chapter 3,
Paul continues to talk to the Jewish people, addressing them as those entrusted with God’s word. Can we ever be perfect? Because one has the law, does that make them less sinful? Is anyone without sin?
And then it really starts to get good….
What are we justified by???

It is easy to say one’s belief is personal to them and if they have that belief, who am I or anyone else to change that? Playing devil’s advocate, that is my husband’s argument. We talked about his cousin who has recently decided to convert from catholicism and become a Muslim. He has a belief in that doctrine after studying the religion. My dad has a belief in Mormonism. He believes in that and all the doctrine that comes with it.
It might be easy to see me and say, “She now believes in Christ.” And, yes, that is true. I do believe in Christ as my savior, but it is so much more.

This passage is all about hypocrisy and what you really should be focusing your attention on. Even as believers, there are many areas of our lives that we will fall short of, and God does not give up on us. Why would He want us to point out the sin of everyone around us when we are too prideful to admit our own? Does our denial help anyone? Do our accusations help anyone?

Community and people are not always easy, but they are vital. God never asks us to do this life alone. Even if it is just a couple of people, there is the right group for you. Jesus tells us the people are the church.
We can’t expect everyone to be Jesus. Not everyone is going to show you God’s love We have to separate people and hurt from the love of Jesus and the His church.
Just keep going. Build your relationship and you will find the right people, the right church to build you up, and where you will equally build them up. Together you will be the church Jesus intended us to have and spread His love.

This passage is heavy, ya’ll!
And, boy, does it speak to today- in more ways than one.
This passage may be a harder one for some to work through. You may feel like you are being called out. You may be surprised that it says what it says so plainly. You may wonder why you have never heard or read this before. Possibly, pastors don’t want to be so direct in front of a whole congregation. In this passage, Paul is talking about what sin can do when we turn from Him, our minds become dark and confused. He is setting up the rest of the book of Romans to prepare you to understand salvation.

I admit I used to consider myself a total self-help junkie. The world wants to tell you you just need to dig deep and find the strength within. You can do all things if you just focus enough, plan right, have the motivation, do the thing from this mystical inner strength that is just supposed to exist within you. I believed that and simultaneously thought there was just something inherently wrong with me that I could not make this happen. Why could everyone else do this? In an effort to give me all the confidence and inner strength, these self-help concepts left me feeling like a failure. If I was supposed to have all the power to do this on my own, why was I consistently grasping at straws to keep myself together?? Where was this inner strength? Why was I unable to make it all happen and feeling lost in the process. More in this episode…

Why Read Romans? Because it is my jam! Actually, because many consider this to be the greatest literary works of all time. It lays out the Gospel, salvation, and God’s love to ALL people who come to Him. It helped me tremendously as I tend to want to be an overachiever, depend on works for worth, and have a past of believing that is how you gain God’s favor. But Romans says otherwise. Our salvation comes from what He has already done for us, not what we will ever do. We must die in the flesh, accept His gift of Grace and be reborn in the spirit of Jesus Christ. That is Romans and it is amazing.
In this passage…
Paul gives an opening statement.
He explains who he is and who he is in Christ. He is an apostle of God on a mission to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
He then explains his desire to visit Rome and why. He wants to bless them with spiritual gifts and in turn, be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. He plans to bring the Gospel to all, Jews and Gentiles alike.
Then he explains the intent of the letter- the power of God’s Salvation to everyone who believes. Faith.
